Today I read a Facebook status from a friend. She was telling about how she had been having an issue with her cable box for several months and how she thought she’d be charged a lot of money for repairs. So, she put off calling the company until she had saved up a bit of money to pay for the needed repairs. As it turns out, the company didn’t charge her for the visit to her home; and rather than just repair the equipment, they gave her a brand new cable box. This was something she’d been wanting done for several months, but she didn’t request the company’s assistance until she couldn’t put it off any longer. My friend nearly missed the blessing because she made a false assumption and didn’t ask for help. There’s a scripture from the book of James that speaks to this very issue. “You have not because you ask not.” (James 4:2) How many times have you and I nearly missed a blessing because we thought we could handle things on our own? How much time, effort, and stress could we have saved if we’d just asked for help in the first place?
The Master Jesus instructed us to pray, believing, and we would receive the answer to our prayer. (Matthew 21:22) The trick, if you can call it that, is to ask. You can’t receive unless you first ask. Prayer works wonders, and I think the reason so many answers to prayer seem so miraculous is because we wait until the last minute to ask, when things can’t get any worse. Of course the answer is going to be miraculous; we let things get too far out of hand. If we’d asked when the situation was not quite so desperate, the answer wouldn’t have been so spectacular. Could that be why we use prayer as a last resort? To guarantee a bigger answer? I’ll leave that for you to ponder. If nothing else, learn from my friend’s experience.
Much love and many blessings,
Rev. Jeff
