All Roads Lead to God

An old proverb says, “All roads lead to Rome.”  Well, spiritually, all roads lead to God.  I know a lot people have problems with that idea.  They can’t grasp the concept that Spirit doesn’t play favorites, and that there isn’t one way to Heaven.

The truth of the matter is there’s only One.  You can call it God, Spirit, the Universe, Divine Mind, All That Is, Jehovah, Allah, Ra, Goddess…it doesn’t matter what you call It because It goes by different names.  People reach out and contact the One in many different ways.  But they’re all reaching for the same thing.

In the book of Genesis, it says, “In the beginning, God…”  It doesn’t specify which God.  It doesn’t need to indicate one God or another, because It’s all God.

If we were in New York City and we wanted to go to Los Angeles, there are a lot of different ways we can get there.  We can start walking or we could drive a car.  If we choose to drive, we can travel any number of roads to get to LA.  Or, we could fly.  We could have an hour layover in Chicago, or Atlanta, or Dallas, or we would fly nonstop from New York.  We could take a train, a bus, ride a bike, even fly to London and then head east, through Europe and Asia, where we could catch a boat and sail across the Pacific Ocean.  There are so many ways to get to Los Angeles from New York, but it’s all the same destination.

So, if God is all there is, there have to be a lot of ways to connect with It.  It’s pretty arrogant to think that in a world of 7 billion people, only a relatively small handful have found the only way.

In John chapter 10, Jesus refers to himself as the Good Shepherd.  Then he says something interesting.  In verse 16 he says, “I have other sheep that are not of this flock. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.” It seems logical to me that these “other sheep” would come from different parts of the world, observing other practices, naming Deity with other names.

Yes, all roads lead to Rome…and all paths lead to God.  You don’t have to like that idea.  You don’t have to agree with it.  But I think all of us would do well to consider it and ponder the implications of it.

Much love and many blessings,

Rev. Jeff
