From Negative to Positive

In my last blog post I wrote about the importance of having a good report, of keeping your thoughts and speech aligned with Good.  That seems like a pretty tall order, doesn’t it?  I can imagine a lot of people saying things like, “Well, THAT’S easier said than done!”

In his book The Science of Mind, Dr. Ernest Holmes said this:

A change of consciousness does not come by simply willing or wishing.  It is not easy to hold the mental attention to an ideal while the human experience is discordant, but it is possible.  Knowing the Truth is not a process of self-hypnosis, but one of a gradual unfoldment of the inner self.

In the Bible, there is a story recorded in the books of Matthew and Mark about Jesus exorcising a demon from a child after his disciples had been unable to do so.  When asked why they could not drive the demon out, Jesus told them that it was because the demon could only come out through prayer and fasting.

Metaphysically, a demon is an idea or a state of consciousness that has come about through unwise or ignorant thinking processes.  In other words, thinking negative thoughts can give rise to negative consequences, or demons.  Prayer is communion between man and God.  Ernest Holmes describes it as silent contemplation of the Divine Presence.  Fasting is denial, abstinence from error thoughts.

So, how does one exorcise a demon, or a negative state of consciousness?  It’s simple enough.  By prayer (communing with the Divine) and fasting (refraining and abstaining from erroneous thinking.)  Quantum physics tells us that two objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time.  If we put our mental focus on the Good, on the positive, then we don’t have room in our minds for negative thinking.  And when we change our thinking, we change our life circumstances.  The form of our lives follows the thoughts of our minds.  It’s all cause and effect, really.

You know how I said that it was simple enough to “exorcise a demon”?  Well, it might be simple, but it isn’t easy.  It takes diligence to keep your mind occupied with good things and to dispel any negatives that try to take over your thoughts.  But, like Ernest Holmes said, it can be done.  That’s why this is called “spiritual work.”  The Bible says, “Faith without works is dead.”  (James 2: 20, 26.)

Your assignment, should you choose to accept it, is to “work it.”  Exorcise some demons of your own.  All it takes is for you to spend some time contemplating the good in your life, and toss those negative thoughts right out the window.  Then have faith that the good you’re thinking about and working toward, is on its way to manifesting into your reality.  It takes effort.  But don’t take my word for it.  Try it for yourself.  It’s worth it.

Much love and many blessings,

Rev. Jeff
