I remember an Internet meme I saw on Facebook that said, “If in the beginning there was only God, then what do YOU think you were made of?”
The Bible tells us that we were made in the image and likeness of the Creator. That’s not to say that we look like God physically because God isn’t a person. The Master Jesus said that God is Spirit (John 4:24) and so we, too, are truly only Spirit. Our physical body is just clothing for who we really are.
In the 10th chapter of John, the Jews are ready to stone Jesus for blasphemy because he didn’t deny being the Messiah. (John 10:24-38) In that passage, Jesus quotes the book of Psalms, saying, “Have I not said, ‘You are gods and children of the Most High?’” (Psalm 82:6) That is the truth of who we are. We are gods in potential. Granted, many times we fall short of our potential, but that doesn’t lessen our identity as divine beings.
Paul wrote in his letter to the Philippians, “Think of yourselves the way Christ Jesus thought of himself. He was like God in every way, but he did not think that his being equal with God was robbing God.” (Philippians 2:5-6)
It’s time to stop playing small. As Marianne Williamson said, “Your playing small doesn’t serve the world.” You are made in the image and likeness of God. God’s not poor. God’s not sick. God’s not unhappy, or stressed, or any of those other things. But you are those things only because you say you are. However…you can choose again. You can re-frame your words and claim a new truth about yourself.
In the book of Isaiah and throughout the book of Psalms, we read that we can “Sing to the Lord a new song.” (Is. 42:10) Isn’t it time you realized who you really are? And isn’t it time you changed your tune? Remember that you are created by God out of God. Sing to the Lord a new song. Tell yourself the truth of who and what you really are.
Much love and many blessings,
Rev. Jeff
