I had occasion to chat with a minister friend of mine this morning. During the course of our conversation about a particular matter that had been in the works for a while and had yet to come to fruition, I was given a word of remembrance from the book of Galatians.
The Apostle Paul had written a letter to the Church at Galatia and in chapter 6 he encourages them saying, “Whatever someone sows is what he will reap…and in time we will reap the harvest if we don’t get discouraged and give up.”
The example of the farmer sowing a seed and then waiting on the crop is probably the best example Paul could have used. Metaphysically, he is talking about the sowing of thoughts rather than actual seeds. Everything begins with a thought. An invention couldn’t have come into being unless someone thought of it first. When the Universe was created, it was because God first had the thought and then spoke the Word. Literally EVERYTHING begins as a thought.
The problem that a lot of folks (if not most folks) have is that they become discouraged before the seed takes root and begins to grow. The farmer knows he can’t plant a seed in the ground today and expect to go out and have fresh vegetables tomorrow. It takes time. The seed needs to germinate. The first tendrils of the plant need to break the surface of the soil and then grow into a mature plant capable of producing.
Our thoughts are the same way. When we pray, we’re planting a seed into the Mind of God. (That Mind has been called “the Field of Pure Potentiality” because the potential for everything under the sun resides there.) I’ll hear people say, “God didn’t answer my prayer.” Well, did you give God time to work on it? We live in an age of instant gratification. We have high speed internet. We can go online to buy and pay for whatever we desire in mere moments. We can speed to destinations on the other side of the world in a matter of hours rather than weeks. We can chat with one another over great distances in real time via text messages. We have come to expect things to happen right away. But God doesn’t always work like that. Some things take time.
It’s good that things take time to occur. Most people aren’t ready for an instantaneous miracle. It turns their entire world upside down and they end up back where they started. Just look at the example of lottery jackpot winners. The vast majority of them weren’t ready or equipped to handle a lot of money in a short period of time, and coupled with the whole instant gratification mindset, ended up losing their fortunes.
We know what we desire for our lives. God knows how to bring it about, perfectly and for our highest good. We just have to give God time to work out the details, to set up the circumstances and situations that will position us to receive what we’re asking for. So, go ahead and plant those seeds. But be prepared to wait for the harvest. Very few things happen instantly. Plant your seeds and then allow the Divine Process to work. In due time you’ll receive your harvest if you don’t get discouraged and give up.
Much love and many blessings,
Rev. Jeff
